Apologizing Properly In A Relationship

Posted & filed under Articles.

If you’re still using free dating sites to meet someone, then you may not know it yet, but you’re going to fight like cats and dogs with your significant other eventually. It’s only a matter of time; every couple fights. The couple that doesn’t fight most likely isn’t a couple at all.

9 times out of 10, you’ll immediately regret getting into a fight and start seeking an opportunity to apologize. To apologize properly, there’s a bit of an art to it. You can’t just go and say you’re sorry. Well, it will work sometimes, but sometimes it won’t.

Even if you’re still using free dating sites, be sure to stockpile these apology tips for the future

With Feeling

It’s hard to show any true feeling through text on a dating site, but it’s really easy when apologizing face to face. Don’t say sorry just to say it. Make sure that you mean it before you offer it up. If that means you have to wait, then you should wait. It’s better to be genuine here.

No “Ands” or “Buts”

If you’re apologizing and then adding a “but,” you’re basically negating the entire apology. When you apologize to your mate, leave it at an apology. This isn’t the time to say, “Honey, I’m sorry, but you…” Yeah, you can see how that can ruin the moment and put you back at square one.

Keep it Simple

This isn’t the movies or the romance section of the library. There’s no need for purple prose here. Keep the apology simple and leave the adjectives in the thesaurus where they belong. This isn’t the time to show off your literary prowess.

Stay on Topic

A lot of us have a habit of using apology time to bring up other grievances. This is a big no-no. If you’re ready to apologize, make sure you’re sticking with the topic at hand. Don’t stray into other territories, or else you’ll be apologizing for something else.
