When I moved from Canada to Merseyside, England due to a new position in the care industry, I really thought I would have to blindly fumble my way around for months and months on end until I met someone – anyone. I wasn’t really keen on trying to date in England right away, but I did want to get involved with social networking and to meet people around the immediate area.
Because I was taking a management position, I had doubts that my “co-workers” would actually be friendly to me. And I wasn’t entirely sure if I should try to come across as a friend anyway. Business is business, and I didn’t want to risk it.
Dating in England is an interesting option
After taking some advice from my cousin, who also lives in England, nearer the greater London area, I went ahead and filled out a semi-complete profile on a popular online dating site. I explained I was looking for friendship mostly, but that I wasn’t dead-set against the idea of meeting that “special someone.”
After a couple of weeks on the online dating service, I had to turn away about a dozen guys with obvious weak pickup lines and single-track minds intent on one thing only. Finally, after weeks of waiting around and fitting into my new shell at work, I met a guy named Peter.
The first date after meeting online
He seemed nice enough, but I was still weary. It turns out Peter’s job wasn’t all that different from mine, so we had some things in common at first. And, since he was local, he could help me understand “English” English so I wouldn’t stand out like a sore thumb.
I agreed to meet him at something he called a “Chippy” and we had a nice cup of tea, some great food and a little bit of trouble understanding one another.
To date, we’re still kind of doing the in-between thing – half friends, half something else. But that seems okay with the both of us. What I got most out of my free online dating experience was a great friend who, luck would have it, introduced me to a lot of great people that I’m currently friends with.
Time will tell if true love is in the air with me and Peter, but I’m thankful that a gal like me, new to a strange area, was able to meet some great people thanks to dating online in England.
